Picture a large room with many people, a 60-inch television on the wall.

People are jovial, many adorning the jerseys of their favorite football teams.

Nachos and chicken wings make the rounds, along with some beer and cocktails.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday; the most hyped day of the year.

Suddenly the crowd goes silent, watching a scene unfold on the television, only to break out in a cheer.

Touchdown? No. First down? No. Turnover? No? Super Bowl Commercial? Yes.

While every (and we do mean "every") holiday marks an occasion for Google to update their homepage logo with some kind of fancy artwork or interactive tech demo, YouTube is often overlooked in such treatment. This year however, while the Pixability team was busy, we noticed something strange.

When creating playlists for your YouTube channel, don’t hold back. A well-organized channel is a useful channel, giving viewers the option (and the motivation) to stick around longer, browse related videos, and get more interested in your brand. Based on our research of over 3,500 businesses who use YouTube, we found that the most successful channels have five times as many playlists as the least successful.

Keep in mind that you can also include other users’ videos in your playlists. This can be a good way to engage your community. For example, if your business is a pharmaceutical company, you might want to include a playlist of carefully curated videos of people speaking about a relevant illness.

Incorporate playlists into your marketing campaigns and use them as a way to group related content, saving your viewers time filtering through other content that might impede a call-to-action. Both Google and YouTube recognize a hot playlist, which will help your search marketing efforts.

As business leaders and marketers (and perhaps as human beings), we continually look for patterns. It may be to capitalize on business opportunities or it may be to save our lives. Nonetheless, recognizing and responding to patterns is critical to our way of functioning.

Recently, I’ve been spending a great deal of time in the online video market. Not surprisingly, I’ve been looking for patterns and asking, “What are the key things in online video and video marketing?” Are there patterns, either good or bad? One area keeps coming up: YouTube. But what does that mean? Are there truly YouTube patterns? In fact, there are at least a couple.

How can you make your videos stand out and increase your reach on YouTube?

On July 5, 2011, Lady Gaga’s official YouTube account was suspended for a copyright violation. The official version is "YouTube account ladygagaofficial has been terminated because we received multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement from claimants including: Air Production...”  But this blog post is not about Lady Gaga; this blog post is about YOU. Imagine you’ve spent countless hours posting all your videos on YouTube, creating playlists, adding descriptions and tags, and connecting with the community to amass hundreds of views and comments - and then you wake up one morning and all of it is gone. You have no one to call. YouTube is owned by Google, which means there’s no way to hear a friendly voice on the other side of the phone when you’ve got a problem with one of their products or services.

Is video necessary to market your company or your personal brand? The answer is a definite “yes.” In case you’re still contemplating the question, let me throw out just a couple stats: an average U.S. Internet user watches 186 videos per month, and your site is 50 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google search results if your site includes video (Source: Forrester Research). Video is the best medium to build trust and reveal your authenticity. It conveys your tone of voice, your emotions, your unique identity. It’s also a time-saver, letting you talk to a large audience all at once.

Video makes us stand out in the crowd and be more effective communicators. While skimming through my LinkedIn updates this morning, I noticed that more people are starting to share links to videos in their activity stream. Are you doing it as well? If you don’t, you should. It is a very simple process – just paste the YouTube links into the update field.

300 million people have watched TED talks on video. Chris Anderson, curator of the TED conference, gave a talk about this phenomenon that is very much worth watching. Anderson claims “what Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press did for writing, online video can now do for face-to-face communication.”

Our customers often ask us which video platforms they should upload their marketing videos to. "YouTube" is the obvious answer -- everybody knows that this Google subsidiary is the market leader. But how important are the other platforms that are out there?

At one point, there were over 120 websites where you could upload your videos, but this number has declined significantly. Nowadays, there are probably about a dozen platforms that are still relevant, including sites like Vimeo, Yahoo Video and MySpace Video. But just how big are these YouTube competitors?

We all know that online video is big and growing rapidly. But when you look at some recent statistics, you’ll probably be surprised by just how big video on the Internet really is. And that shows what a powerful marketing tool online video has become.
