Inclusive Media Initiative Creator Q&A: Jori Mezuda
Pixability’s Inclusive Media Initiative amplifies the voices of diverse creators, fostering representation and connection across digital media. By showcasing YouTube creators from varied backgrounds and identities, we aim to challenge stereotypes and celebrate inclusivity.
From electrifying festival stages to kitchen heat, JORI creative world blends bass drops with bold flavors. As a Filipino-American DJ, music producer, and professional chef, JORI brings a one-of-a-kind perspective to the cultural and creative space—where rhythm meets heritage and every beat tells a story. Her content isn’t just about performance—it’s about transformation, celebration, and connection!
In honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, we spoke with JORI about the roots that inspire her genre-blending bass house and trap music, how her upbringing between the U.S. and the Philippines fuels her creative identity, and how she’s building bridges between food, sound, and culture. She also shares her journey from culinary school to music festivals, the power of Filipino representation in the electronic scene, and why community remains at the heart of everything she creates.
Theresa: How do you identify within the AANHPI community, and what role has your cultural background played in shaping your values or creative voice?
Jori: I proudly identify as a Filipino-American woman. My mom grew up in Tondo, Manila, and that part of my heritage is a deep source of pride and inspiration. Being raised between two cultures has given me a unique voice—I learned how to balance humility, resilience, and hospitality, which are core Filipino values, with the boldness and hustle of growing up in the U.S. That duality shows up in everything I do—whether I’m cooking, producing music, or performing, I always bring both sides of myself to the table.
Theresa: You’ve built a strong presence through personal style and thoughtful storytelling. How do you use cooking and music as a way to express identity and connect with your audience?
Jori: Cooking and music are my love languages. They both carry so much emotion, energy, and culture. I always say, “I cook food and cook beats”—because both allow me to tell stories, make people feel something, and bring happiness. Whether it’s the drop in a bass house track or a dish I grew up eating with family, I want my audience to experience flavor and fire. It’s about connection— Cooking up vibes, culture, and connection!
Theresa: How has your creative journey evolved, from your early videos to the inspiring lifestyle content you share now?
Jori: When I first started, I was just excited to share my skills—whether it was DJing, cooking, or experimenting with new sounds. But over time, I realized the deeper power of storytelling and representation. Now, I create with intention. I want my lifestyle content to reflect who I am not just as an artist, but as a Filipina, and someone who’s constantly evolving. I’ve learned to trust my intuition, and I am proud to share it in a way that uplifts others too.
Theresa: You recently went to the Philippines, watching your shorts makes me hungry! What are some tips you can share for creating content while traveling?
Jori: Thank you! Here are Top 10 Tips from JORI:
- Stay present and enjoy the moment – the best content comes when you’re truly immersed in the experience.
- Clear space on your memory cards – always make sure you have storage ready before a big shoot day.
- Bring an external hard drive – especially if you’re shooting a lot of video or high-res photos. Backups are essential.
- Charge all your gear in advance – batteries die fast when you’re on the move, so always stay powered up.
- Consider hiring local creatives – photographers, editors, or even fixers can help you capture more and explore deeper.
- Be aware of your surroundings and local laws – safety and cultural respect come first.
- Be authentic – people connect with real moments over curated perfection.
- Follow your intuition – trust your instincts; they’ll lead you to gold.
- Make a food/location bucket list – plan the places you want to try and film your experience.
- Schedule time to edit and post – don’t let the content pile up. Share while the energy is fresh!
Overall, leave room for spontaneity because that’s where the magic happens!
Theresa: What does visibility look like for you as an AANHPI woman in digital media? Where do you still see gaps in representation?
Jori: Visibility means showing up as my full self—Genuine and Authentic. It’s being a Filipina DJ and chef in spaces where we’re still underrepresented, especially in EDM and food media. While there’s been progress, we still need more AANHPI creators at the forefront, not just as token faces, but as decision-makers and innovators. We deserve to be seen in our complexity—not just for our culture, but for our creativity, style, and leadership too.
Theresa: What advice would you give to brands that want to build more authentic partnerships with AANHPI creators?
Jori: Start with real relationships. Learn about our work, our values, our communities—don’t just reach out during heritage months. Give us creative freedom, trust our voices, and pay fairly. The most meaningful partnerships I’ve had came from brands that saw me as a collaborator who can enhance the connection between the audience, brand, and myself.
Theresa: How do you stay grounded and true to yourself while navigating the fast pace and trends of the creator world?
Jori: I stay grounded by remembering why I started: to create joy, to build community, and to represent my culture. I also surround myself with people who keep me honest and inspired.
Theresa: What does AANHPI Heritage Month mean to you personally and how do you hope others engage with it this year?
Jori: AANHPI Heritage Month is a celebration of our stories, strength, and spirit. For me, it’s a chance to honor my mother, my roots, and the culture that raised me. I hope people engage by listening/watching more, supporting AANHPI creators and businesses, and showing up being their best versions of themselves by being proud of who they are!
